The FE & Skills sector plays a critical role in preparing learners for careers shaped by environmental sustainability, with green skills increasingly being embedded across industries.
The Society for the Environment (SocEnv) contributes in supporting this transition by strengthening links between technical education and recognised environmental competence. Working with employers, educational providers, assessment organisations and professional bodies, SocEnv highlights how qualifications such as apprenticeships, T Levels and Higher Technical Qualifications align, or have the potential to align, with environmental professional standards.
A key development is the mapping of over 20 apprenticeships to the competencies required for Registered Environmental Technician (REnvTech) and Registered Environmental Practitioner (REnvP) status, enabling a smooth progression from apprenticeship completion to professional recognition – forming the foundation for long-term career and professional development.
To widen access further, SocEnv has introduced the knowledge-focused Entry‑Level Environmentalist (ELEnv) register, supporting early‑career individuals and offering guided progression towards one of the competency-based registers (REnvTech, REnvP or CEnv).
Through collaboration across education, industry and professional bodies, this work strengthens pathways into green careers and supports a workforce equipped for and shaping a more sustainable future.

The original article (written by Tom Cheek MSET QTLS of SocEnv) first featured on FE News, presents how educational pathways are developing green skills, and how this can lead to new routes to professional registration.
