Guidance for educational providers

Inspire the Next Generation to: Get Recognised. Get Connected. Get Growing.

At SocEnv, we understand that career journeys are rarely linear, especially in a fast-evolving world shaped by environmental challenges, new technologies, and shifting opportunities.  Increasingly, courses and qualifications are delivering the green skills required to address those challenges and opportunities.

That’s why we’ve developed the Entry Level Environmentalist (ELEnv) register: a stepping-stone for learners who are passionate about the environment and already gaining knowledge, but who haven’t yet built the hands-on experience needed for professional registration as:

  • Registered Environmental Technician – REnvTech
  • Registered Environmental Practitioner – REnvP
  • Chartered Environmentalist – CEnv

We’re inviting educational providers to introduce Entry-Level Environmentalist ELEnv as a way to support learners (on completing their course) in turning passion into profession and promote wider positive destination.

Here’s how ELEnv can benefit your learners:

  • A clear, supported pathway into professional registration, from ELEnv to one of the competency-based registers within 3 years.
  • The chance to gain post-nominals (ELEnv) that highlight their commitment to environmental professionalism.
  • Access to mentoring, professional networks, and guidance through one of SocEnv’s licensed professional bodies.
  • A sense of belonging to a vibrant, inter-disciplinary community of environmental professionals.

By encouraging learners to pursue ELEnv, you’re opening doors to lifelong career development, professional credibility, and the opportunity to make real environmental impact.

Working together to empower the next generation of change-makers. Introduce your students to ELEnv and help them take that crucial first step toward becoming leaders in sustainability and environmental practice.

1. Check eligibility requirements
Review the eligibility criteria listed below. If met, simply contact one of the licensed members, using the link titled ‘SocEnv Licensed Members’.  They’ll help guide you on the next steps for your students.

2. Explore recognised courses
We’re compiling a list of courses and qualifications that automatically meet the eligibility criteria for applying to ELEnv, regardless of the provider or prior experience. To view this list, click the link on this page titled ‘Courses & Qualifications‘.

If your qualification isn’t on the list, it doesn’t necessarily mean your students are not eligible. Please reach out to the Licensed Member, who can confirm eligibility and guide you and your students on the next steps. They’ll ask for details about the qualification and any relevant experience the students may have on completion.

3. Deliver an introductory session to your students
Use our session toolkit to enable your students to explore the benefits of being professionally registered and the features of professional body membership that can be accessed as part of this.  We’ve created all the resources, assets and session plans. Just click on the link ‘Toolkits and Resources for Educational Providers‘ to access and download.

Supporting Your Learners Towards ELEnv Registration

To be eligible for ELEnv registration, individuals must meet the following criteria:

  • ✅ Be a qualified individual member (or equivalent) of a SocEnv Licensed Member organisation. This ensures they are covered by that organisation’s Code of Conduct and disciplinary procedures.
  • ✅ Hold a qualification with environmental and sustainability content at RQF Level 2 or above (or equivalent) in England, Wales, or Northern Ireland.  That’s a level 5 or higher in Scotland, and a level 4 or higher in Ireland.  Need more advice on this? Check out the link under ‘Useful Links & Application Support’.
  • 🌍 Applying from outside the UK? We’d love to hear from you! If you’re not sure whether your qualification fits, get in touch with us here and we’ll help you out.
  • ✅ Be willing to adhere to the Society’s Code of Professional Conduct.
  • ✅ Understand that ELEnv registration is time-limited.  It’s valid for up to three years, during which registrants are expected to progress to REnvTechREnvP, or CEnv.

By ensuring your learners meet these requirements, you’re helping them build a strong foundation for a successful and sustainable environmental career.

Cost

To be awarded Entry-Level Environmentalist, an individual needs to be a member of a professional body licensed to award it.  They will be able to advise of the total costs, including membership and registration.  More details about each Licensed Member can be found be using the link on this page ‘Explore SocEnv Licensed Members‘.
