Higher Technical Qualifications HTQs

Connecting to the ELEnv Register: Building a Skilled Environmental Workforce

Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) are advanced technical courses in England at Level 4 and Level 5, including options like Foundation Degrees, Higher National Certificates, and Higher National Diplomas.

What makes HTQs distinctive is that they are aligned to employer-designed standards, the same occupational standards of apprenticeships, ensuring that learners develop the practical knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed for specialist roles.

This employer-led approach means businesses can trust that HTQs develop individuals who are job-ready, gaining qualifications that carry real value in the workplace. Approved HTQs display the official ‘HTQ Quality Mark’ (as displayed on this page), making it easy for both learners and employers to identify these programmes.

Typically lasting one to two years full-time, HTQs also offer flexible routes such as part-time study, modular learning, and distance options. Financial support is available for tuition and maintenance, whether studying full or part-time.

HTQs are delivered through further education colleges, universities, and Institutes of Technology IoT. They provide clear progression routes, whether that’s moving into an apprenticeship, continuing to a full degree, or employment (entry and progression).

HTQs are ideal for those starting their careers or professionals seeking to upskill or retrain. And now, with clear routes linking HTQs to the Entry-Level Environmentalist (ELEnv) register, these qualifications can open doors to the support and guidance made available through professional body membership and environmental professional registration.

Leverage your HTQ achievement to gain the post-nominals ELEnv

At SocEnv we’ve created an approach that enables us to recognise any HTQ as being eligible for Entry-Level Environmentalist (ELEnv), if it has been based on an occupational standard listed in the Skills England occupational maps, and where the related apprenticeship has been ratified by SocEnv as eligible for a shortened route to REnvTech and REnvP.
