T Levels and the Future of Environment Skills

Building the skilled environmental workforce with T Level industry placements

The agriculture and environment sector faces mounting pressures – adapting to climate change, meeting sustainability targets, responding to rising food and energy security demands, and addressing workforce shortages as experienced staff near retirement. Land based and environmental businesses must act now to bridge skills gaps.

T Level industry placements, now central to the UK’s technical qualifications system for 16–19 year olds, present a practical and cost effective solution to attracting and developing the next generation of rural professionals.

What are T Levels & industry placements?

T Levels are two year qualifications, designed with employers, and equivalent to three A Levels. They blend classroom learning (80%) with meaningful workplace experience (20%) – equating to around 315 hours or 45 days of industry placement.

There’s flexibility too. Placements can be structured in blocks, day release, or hybrid models. Some elements may be completed remotely, and SMEs can often access funding support to help with hosting students. T Levels span a wide range of subjects, including those most relevant to the environment sector – such as Agriculture, Land Management, Environmental Science, Animal Care, and Business Services. Why environment businesses should engage

By hosting a T Level student, employers can tap into early access to emerging talent – young people who are motivated, knowledgeable, and eager to learn. Placements provide a valuable pipeline into apprenticeships, higher education or long term employment.

Getting Started: an action plan for land based and environmental businesses

  1. Access support by visiting the T Level Employer Support website for guidance on planning and placement setup on the Government website here. You can also access events and one to one support. Do keep an eye on upcoming events here or email [email protected] to arrange a call with a T Level specialist. All support is free of charge and delivered by the SDN Mesma Group on behalf of the Department for Education.
  2. Prepare for placement – Identify which placement model (block, day release, hybrid) best suits your seasonal work cycles and staffing needs.
  3. Work with local providers – Collaborate with T Level colleges to co-design projects relevant to your business , such as soil health monitoring, biodiversity mapping, or renewable energy feasibility studies.
  4. Set learning goals – Agree clear objectives with the provider and student, ensuring alignment with your business priorities and the T Level curriculum.
  5. Review and recruit – At the end of the placement, evaluate the student’s contribution and consider whether they fit future recruitment needs.
